New Project Kick-Off: Sustainable Urban Transitions Lab

The Chair of Infrastructure Management, led by Prof. Bryan Adey and the Chair of Transportation and Mobility Planning, led by Prof. Eva Heinen are excited to announce the launch of the Sustainable Urban Transitions Lab, a collaboration between ETH Zürich and Bolt, as part of the Bolt Urban Fund programme.

Over the next two years, the research lab will connect Bolt’s frontline data with ETH Zürich’s technical expertise to understand urban mobility patterns in European cities and develop scalable blueprints for implementing shared mobility.
Seville and Hanover are the first two cities to leverage the Sustainable Urban Transitions Lab.
It’s a one-of-a-kind alliance between a shared mobility operator, an academic institution, and cities which are set on amplifying the role of shared mobility in smart, sustainable development.
The project mission
Urban mobility is evolving faster than ever. Cities have seen major shifts in transport behaviour in the past few years. The COVID pandemic led to a boom in hybrid work, high cost of living has moved people to city outskirts, and as car ownership declines new modes of shared and sustainable mobility are coming in to take its place.
These trends are reshaping how people move in cities and, crucially, they’re placing pressure on transport authorities and city officials to accommodate their new behaviours.
With the new Sustainable Urban Transitions Lab, Bolt and ETH Zürich aim to provide a complete data-driven picture of how people move across cities, and unlock new solutions that help cities make the best financial decisions when implementing shared and sustainable transport.
