David Zani presents online at the virtual Inter-University Symposium on Infrastructure Management
David Zani will present a short 30 minute talk at the first VISIM (Virtual Inter-University Symposium on Infrastructure Management) session of this year's Fall 2022 program on Friday, Sep. 9 at 12 PM USET (6 PM MESZ).

The session will talk about "Do cost-benefit analyses lead to good projects? Our first insights".
Abstract:
Existing research and data show that both cost and benefit estimates for infrastructure projects are inaccurate in many parts of the world. Costs are systematically underestimated, and benefits are systematically overestimated. Cost-benefit-analyses are therefore inefficient as a decision-making aid, potentially leading to suboptimal decision making. The following research will 1) show if and to what extent this problem is present in public-sector infrastructure projects, 2) show the potential advantages of gathering and managing cost and benefit data, and 3) suggest an organization of project data to provide such advantages. This talk specifically will discuss some of our first insights into this topic from project data gathered thus far (part of work package 1).
